Is HDTV really all that important
for Home Cinema?

Do I need HDTV for a Home Cinema?

If you are planning a home cinema and are going to purchase a new television, it is a good idea to get one that is HDTV-compatible.

Increased Availability of HDTV Broadcasts:

The amount of Hi-Def programming is set to increase, with broadcast, cable, and satellite service across the country. Also, the audio supplied is in surround sound, which makes astounding use your surround sound receiver.

Progressive Scan Factor

Another of the twists and turns in the set-up is that even though DVD is not a high resolution format, HDTVs can display what is referred to as a progressive scan signal. This means that you get the most out of your DVD player (many players can output progressive scan giving you a smoother film-like image when shown on a progressive-scan capable television).

DVD Upscaling

There is a growing number of DVD players now that have HD-upscaling capability. This makes uses best use of high definition picture display of HD-compatible televisions.

Future of High Definition

Lastly, true high definition DVD, in the form of Blu-ray and HD-DVD is on the way, which means full use of the promise of HDTV, far surpassing the capabilities, for image detail, of current DVD technology, especially when watching on large projection screens.
